Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Sleep deprivation is a serious health issue. If you or a loved one has difficulty sleeping, it’s important to realize the impact it can have on their overall wellbeing.
Impacts of Sleep Deprivation
Depression
You’ve probably heard the saying “woke up on the wrong side of the bed,” when someone is not in a very good mood. If someone is frequently not getting enough sleep, it’s also going to take a toll on their mood and mental health. Those with sleep deprivation are ten times more likely to have chronic depression.
Aging of Skin
Research has discovered that lack of sleep can lead to advanced aging of the skin. This is all due to cortisol. While we sleep, the hormone levels of cortisol decrease. If you are not sleeping, this doesn’t allow for the skin to regenerate due to the higher cortisol levels.
Memory
Our memory is not as sharp when we don’t get enough sleep and it could even be impactful long-term. The brain needs sleep to solidify memories for future recall.
Heart Disease
Sleep deprivation is linked to higher rates of heart disease and stroke. It also increases the likelihood of high blood pressure. As you sleep, your blood pressure lowers. However, if sleep is not occurring or frequently interrupted, your blood pressure and stress levels will be elevated.
Weakened Immunity
Our bodies are so amazing that, as we sleep, they repair themselves and strengthen immunity. While sleeping, the body produces cytokines, a protein that attacks infection and inflammation. Cytokines are only created during the sleep cycle. While you may not be able to ward off every sickness with sleep, it will help to make your system stronger to fight any threats off.
