If you’re asking yourself, “why should I replace my CPAP accessories?” you’ve come to the right place! Advanced Respiratory Care Network specializes in CPAP products for better sleep and easier breathing. But you’re only going to accomplish these things if you take care of your equipment. Below are a few reasons CPAP accessories should be replaced on a regular basis.
If Your Mask No Longer Fits
Masks wear out over time, no matter how well you take care of them. If you notice that your mask has changed its shape or the air seal is no longer as strong, it’s time to replace it. Unfortunately, there’s no amount of cleaning that can fix a leaky mask. This is troublesome because a weak seal means you’re not getting the proper amount of oxygen to breathe well and sleep better at night. The best option when this happens is to replace your mask. We typically recommend replacing your mask every three months to avoid deterioration.
If You Tend to Overtighten Your Headgear
Many individuals end up overtightening their headgear when their CPAP mask no longer fits properly, or the seal is weakened for some reason. Since you buy your headgear at a certain size to fit your head and face shape, overtightening can cause a variety of issues. This will not only cause discomfort, but you’ll still likely experience leaks which lead to improper airflow and poor breathing.
If There is Dirt and/or Oil Buildup
Dirt and oil buildup is particularly common with CPAP mask cushions and nasal pillows as these accessories come in contact with your skin the most. Even if you clean your accessories often, as recommended, you will inevitably acquire that unwanted dirt. This can cause the cushion or nasal pillows to soften which weakens their seal. Dirt and oil buildup also negatively impacts your hygiene. You’ll want to replace these accessories often because they tend to trap the oil and dirt against your skin which can cause discomfort and irritation.
If You Notice Mold or Bacteria Growth
It’s easy for your hose to lock in moisture while you use it, which can cause mold and bacteria growth.
If Your Accessories Become Damaged
Sometimes your mask just gets damaged. Whether this is from traveling, raising kids or just normal wear and tear, it’s a good idea to replace it as soon as it’s damaged. It’s tempting to wait until the recommended refill time to replace your equipment, but as we mentioned above, damaged accessories usually cause a leaky seal that leads to poor breathing.
