Although quitting smoking is good for your health, it can be one of the most challenging habits to overcome. So how do you quit smoking for good? Many people don’t even know where to start. Below are some self-help ideas that may help you along the way. Be proud of yourself for taking the first big step and starting this journey.
Think Positively
Quitting smoking may seem like a daunting task if you have never tried it before. Maybe you have tried, and it did not work out. Whatever the case may be, do not let these thoughts stop you from starting. Everything is tough when you first start out. Just keep remembering why you started.
If you have tried to quit before and it didn't work out, look back on those experiences and try to figure out where it went wrong. Learn from those experiences so you can do better this time.
Make a Plan
Setting up a plan will hold you more accountable than just saying that you are going to quit. Pick a start date and make a promise to yourself that you will stick to it. Sticking to the “not a drag” rule (telling yourself that no matter what you will not take a drag of a cigarette) will really help you along your journey.
Planning ahead for situations in which you may be tempted, such as parties or even hanging out with a certain group of friends, can also help. Come up with an escape route or actions/phrases you will do/say to help you overcome the obstacles that these situations might throw at you.
Consider Your Diet
When you are starting out on your journey, it can be beneficial to review your diet. There are many foods and beverages out there that can make you crave a cigarette. For example, meats can make a cigarette seem more appealing and even taste better than fruits or vegetables. So, try swapping out that steak for a nice salad or vegetable pizza. Similarly, certain beverages make people crave a cigarette more. Those include alcohol, coffee, fizzy drinks, tea or soda. So, when you are out, go for that cup of water or juice instead. It will be beneficial for you in the long run.
Get Some Non-Smoking Help
If you know others who are also wanting to stop smoking, get together and hold each other accountable. This is a great way to assist in the quitting process. Having people that you know and trust around you doing the same thing will make the daunting task seem a little less frightening. If no one around you wants to stop smoking, there are other options such as joining a support group.
Exercise
Exercising does wonders for both the mind and body. Simply going for a quick walk or stretch can help cut cravings and may help your brain produce anti-craving chemicals. Not to mention, exercise gives your brain something else to think about rather than that cigarette you want.
Make a List of Reasons to Quit
Grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down all the reasons that you wanted to start this journey. Whether it’s to better yourself, or even for a better way of life for your children, write it down. If you find yourself struggling at some point, grab that paper and look at it to remind yourself why you started in the first place.
Take these ideas and implement them into your life. It may be tough at first but once you do it long enough, it will not seem as challenging anymore. Keep reminding yourself why you started. It may just be the push you need to keep going!
